Slime–Yay a Substitute for Liquid Starch

If you live in Canada, or at least British Columbia, you can’t buy liquid starch.  Which is disappointing because there are a lot of recipes for art and sensory activities that call for it.

During our Christmas break I was on Pinterest and found a blog that found a substitute for liquid starch.  You can check out Fun at Home with Kids and read how she came about her discovery.

Yesterday morning we made our first batch.  First empty a container of clear glue into a container.  We added blue food colouring and sparkles and mixed.

Next we added the Seventh Generation laundry detergent a tablespoon at a time.  As you stir it begins to congeal and you want to continue adding till the liquid glue is almost gone.

In total we added 2 and 1/2 tablespoons then turned it out on to the table and played with it.  At first it’s quite sticky but the more you play the drier it becomes.

The children loved it.  Pulling and snapping it apart.

Pressing jewels and buttons into it.  Making faces.

The longer it was played with the more it would stretch.

We are able to stretch it out flat to the point it almost becomes transparent.
Can't wait to try different colours.
