We started out the new year with a new box (well a recycled box freshly covered).
We cut out windows and doors and made it into a bus.
But what kind of bus will it be?
As the children drove the bus we talked about what colour it should be painted and a few children kept saying “reindeer bus”, “Rudolph bus”.
At first I was confused till I remembered that over the Christmas season one of our city’s transit buses is decorated like a red-nosed reindeer.
So today we painted a red nose on the front, used old cds for the eyes and wrapping paper tubes for antlers. We even added lights around the top.
Next week we’ll visit the transit bus maintenance yard to learn more about what is inside a bus.
Hi Maureen! Good for you for following the child's idea even though it was a Christmas idea! I might not have paid attention and glossed that one over (so easy to not pay attention to details sometimes) because Christmas is passed. Question: was the field trip already booked to the bus maintenance yard or were you able to book that so quickly? I need to light a fire under myself for booking more field trips more often. I spend too much time deliberating ideas!!! Thanks so much for continuing to share your awesome ideas!

Hi Heather
DeleteYes it was plus a bus ride the following week. Before Christmas, where we were playing with trains, I talked with the children and grown ups about their interest in big vehicles - there definitely is one. So for the next few months our field trips will be focused on the bus, some emergency vehicles and planes. I'm hoping also to find a place that we can look at bulldozers.
I have to admit that at first I didn't want to make it into a Rudolph bus - I had other ideas. But I reminded myself that I'm not the only one in this program and need to be open to other ideas. Making the Rudolph bus has opened many discussions with the children about their experience around the Christmas season.
