Light Table Ideas

It's a snow day here, our Seuss week is on hold till tomorrow.
So I thought I would post some of the ideas we've had for our light table so far this year.

Using coloured overhead transparency sheets we cut them into different shapes so they could build and decorate a tree.

Coloured paddles, similar coloured beads and little wooden spoons to match, sort and move from one place to another.

Old slides, slideviewers and magnifying glasses for discrimination of details.

Pill boxes, little pipettes (eyedroppers) and coloured water to squeeze, load and unload then mix together.
Coloured transparent tiles of various shapes to build and create.

Coloured flat marbles and clear tubes to fill and pour and do it again.
Coloured gel stickers, flat beads and tongs to create stories.

Old microfiche film, plastic coloured ice cubes to build.
Laminated tissue paper with spider web designs plus black and white flat beads.

Laminated pressed leaves, plastic leaves and acorns from Michaels Craft store and later the children added toy people and animals.

Black and orange flat beads, mini scoop, paper and black and orange markers for pattern building, matching and sorting.

Stuffed squirrels, mini baskets, plastic acorns for colour sorting, one to one correspondence and for feeding the animals.
I would love to hear what ideas you use at your light table.

Seuss Day Two

Today was about feet - The Foot Book was the focus but unfortunately I couldn't find it to read it.  We still had fun starting with following footprints into the room.  I loved the surprised questions from the children -

"What are these for?"
Why they are to walk on, of course.

At the art table they were asked to trace their foot, cut it out and decorate it.

Then we posted them on the hallway wall with a Dr. Seuss quote.
But the most fun and excitement was had on the carpet area.  I had set up a basket with more black footprints, a chart sheet, pencils and instructions.
I encouraged both parent and child to be measured.

Then to count and compare, who needs more feet, who has less - loved the math that was happening.
The following boy was asked this question "Who is longer, you or mom?"  The boy answered "Mom"
Then I asked "How do you know?"  Boy - "There are more."  Me - "How many more does mom have than you?"
So he counted the "more" in mom's line and answered "3".

Green Eggs and Ham

Welcome to Seuss Week.

The week started with the book Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss.

In the sensory table we had green eggs and pom poms of different shades and tea strainers to grab them.

At the art table we painted with eggs.
Separated the yolks from the whites and added food colouring.

The art work dried with a nice shine.

We made Oebleck (borax, white glue and water), wonderful substance to discover what it will do.

I found these cute little frying pans and made coloured eggs and ham to match.

And finally we made scrambled eggs.

 We added green,

and then they wanted to make red.

Ready for the taste test.

Pink was the favourite.

Three Little Pigs House Snack

All week with the focus on pigs I decided that the snack  should reflect that theme.

When we ran out of pretzel sticks I substituted chow mien noodles.
