Talk Like a Pirate

Do pirates go out in the rain?
That was a question that arose last Friday when we celebrated
Talk Like a Pirate day.
It was pouring outside but the temperature was warm and there
was no wind.  Do we go or stay at school?
   sept 20 015
We had warned the families that yes we would we go regardless
of the weather.  So this was our test, “will we follow through?”.
    sept 20 016
Colleen, my co-planner from another StrongStart centre, and I
arrived early to set up.
sept 20 003 sept 20 004
 sept 20 010 sept 20 011
Then we waited to see if anyone would join us.
      sept 20 055
And they did.  We were impressed with how many came and
that they arrived dressed to get wet.
                sept 20 060
           Or prepared to stay dry.

 sept 20 036 sept 20 054
sept 20 043  sept 20 062
We had a lot of fun being pirates, building boats, playing in
the water, searching for treasure.

To finish the morning, Captain Thunderpants joined us for a few songs.

Pirates

Today ended our pirate play.  The room has been full of
activities to enhance our play.  Here’s a glimpse.
     PicMonkey Collage 5
Dramatic play has been front and centre in the room.  So much
has happened in this area from steering the ship or rowing the boat,
using a compass, fighting off sea monsters and searching through
the treasure chest.
     PicMonkey Collage 4
In the sensory table we played with the idea of walking the plank
but beware of the sharks down below.  And of course there was lots
of jewels and sparkly things.
PicMonkey Collage 2
At the art table we made our own pirate face and created a
pirate name.

In the sandbox we found the pirates hideout with gold nuggets.
sept 16 005  sept 16 059
Our new toy became a pirate ship to ride on.

And we learned a new song to sing.

Tomorrow I`ll show you some great pictures from our outdoor pirate
adventure at the shipwrecks.

Apple Pie Tarts

        sept 23 007
This morning the children were welcomed with an invitation
to make apple pie tarts.  I had made a few already so the room
smelled delicious.
            sept 23 008
It started with a simple photo recipe.  Take two slices
of apples and cut them into little pieces.
sept 23 013  sept 23 015
Then fill your pre-made tart shell
       sept 23 017
   and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
sept 23 003  sept 23 019
Sprinkling with cinnamon sugar, rather than mixing the
apples, sugar and cinnamon in a bowl, meant less sugar in
the pie and less dirty dishes.
sept 23 009    sept 23 026
            Bake, cool and enjoy.

Educators Learn and Play

Sorry I haven’t posted in a few days but I have been busy, not just with work, but with co-planning and facilitating a conference for local educators in the early years.
     sept 21 035
It was a wonderful experience bringing many early childhood educators, and a few primary teachers, together for several hours to inspire and be inspired.sept 21 048  sept 21 036
Local Early Childhood Educators presented the topics Explore your Backyard, Social Media, Art, and Oral Storytelling.  We are privilege to have such talented peers in our community.
     sept 21 038
Another ECEr provide an opportunity to chat about ‘loose parts on the playground’.  He brought a large variety of props he built and uses to encourage outdoor exploration.
        PicMonkey Collage
A variety of displays, including documentations, invitations and posters, were available around the school to provoke conversations.
        sept 21 043
Bringing this conference together, with my friend Jackie, was an honour to give back to our learning community.  To have the opportunity to bring us together in a field that is often difficult to do filled me with very positive energy.

Apple Boats for Snack

     sept 18 006
Today we ate sailboats for snacks.
sept 18 014 sept 18 026
But we had to build it first.
PicMonkey Collage
Sticking the mast (pretzels) into the hull was fairly easy.
       sept 18 045
But sticking the sail (cheese slice) onto the mast proved tricky for some.
sept 18 017 sept 18 018 sept 18 019
Some of the boats went sail-less.  Or the sail was eaten separately.
          sept 18 044
I was inspired by a post at Creative Kids Snacks
sept 18 047
         to create this recipe today.

Happy Dot Day~ish

        PicMonkey Collage
Today our school celebrated “The Dot”.  As the families entered the school they found the floor littered with dots.  Some children walked around the dots others skipped and hopped from one dot to another.  Many students and staff wore dots, spots and polka dots too.

Some of the activities they found in StrongStart were:
 sept 17 033 sept 17 035
Dot stickers and chalk at the art table.
sept 17 024 sept 17 026
                                Twister on the carpet.
sept 17 020 sept 17 044
                     Bingo Dotters at the easel.
      sept 17 043
The Dot encourages an "I'll try" attitude and that is what we've been seeing at the art table for the pass two weeks leading up to today.

I hope you made a mark today.
