Wacky Hair Day

Wacky hair day at our school brought the inner Marge out of me.

Plus she had to help with repairs, hence the hard hat.

 At the craft table we made Wacky Hair pencil toppers.

 I found plain wood pencils,

so the children could colour them.

 Hair and googly eyes were added.

Then we showed them how to twirl the pencil

to make the hair wackier.

 What delight for the children when they could do it on their own.

They will tickle your nose if they get too close.

Some children decided to draw with their pencil after making it.

Tray Play This Week

This week's trays included some Easter activities.

Sorting eggs into egg cups.

The cups have the numbers 1-5 printed on them.

Some preferred to sort the eggs by colour.

Matching coloured pom poms to coloured egg baskets.

They used tongs to pick up the pom poms.

 The favourite tray with the older children.

Building a rabbit tower.

 Then roll the coloured die,

Then try to pull out the same coloured bunny from the tower.

Ooops, without knocking it down.

Pop Bottle Painting

This would be great art for Earth Day.

Pop Bottle Painting, I first saw at Alphamom

We used different pop and water bottles, old envelopes and very little paint.

It was popular with the boys.

They enjoyed using the bottles like hammers.

 The 2 handed overhead pound.

Others took some time in deciding how they would place the bottle.

 The prints look like flowers.

We talked about different names of flowers like

daisy and pansy.

 Look how she is checking out the mark left behind

before making another.
Will she make another with the same colour or put the bottle down?

 Not all were flowers.

This is an eensy weensy spider.

This is the spots on a white dog.

For a simple, inexpensive tool it does make 

beautiful pieces of art.

Build a Rainbow

Today the children built a rainbow to eat for snack.

Strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple,

green grapes, blueberries and purple grapes.

 The children threaded the fruit onto wooden skewers

following the recipe.

This little girl is explaining that she doesn't like

cantaloupe so she took two pieces of pineapple instead.

 She used a yellow Cheerio instead of pineapple.

Yum!

Melting Rainbows

We dug out the warming trays today.

I taped crayons together - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.

So we could make rainbows.

 We used overhead transparency film

so they can be hung in the window.

These pictures are taken from the outside and our blinds

were closed inside.

 

We also used one crayon at a time to design pictures.

 Crayon, when melting on plastic, moves

smoothly and allows free movement.

The colours will also blend together to create new colours.

Tray Play

This week's play trays.

Money Bank

 The first is a coffee can covered with paper.

A slit is cut in the lid.

 Metal juice can lids are the coins.

I wrote numbers on one side of each lid

and the corresponding amount of dots on the other.

Some of the families played a game by asking for a certain number

to drop in the can.

 After filling the 'bank' they can take the lid off to empty.

 Then fill it again.

 The second tray consisted of this interesting wire piece.

By the end of the week the consensus was that it is an old curtain tie back.

But it worked well for a weaving frame.

 Good for eye-hand coordination

and fine motor development.

The third tray didn't hold much interest for the children.

 They could spoon the glitter sequins from one container 

to the other.

 This last tray was the most popular.

There's something about pony beads that attracts the children.

 Six colours of beads and six pipe cleaners of the same colours.

 They could match and stack the beads

on to the pipe cleaners.

Closer to the end of the week I found these coloured sticks

at a dollar store.

They must be a little warped because the beads would go on the top

but not slide all the way to the bottom.
