Ready Set Learn 2016

Intended for families and their three-to-five year old children, is all about providing
good information about how to support a young child's early learning
and development.
It also develops positive connections between families, the school system
and local community agencies.
I help facilitate Ready Set Learn events at three schools each year.
I like to plan around a book.
This year we focused on Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses.
After reading the story to the group they were invited
to move from centre to centre playing with their grown up.
At each centre a teacher, principal or speech therapist modeled language
and talked with parents about their child's development.
One centre had stuffies that represented the characters in the book
so they could retell the story together.
Another centre had a mirror and lots of fun glasses to try on.
The parents were encouraged to pretend along with their child
and to talk about feelings when looking at themselves
in the mirror.
They could also decorate their own card board glasses
with stickers, tape and feathers.
Branching away from the book I set up activities that they could easily
do at home.
Setting the table is an activity children love to do
but it also builds language and math skills as well as giving them a stronger sense
of being part of the family.
Making a shopping list together is another great language building activity.
Once made your child can take it to the grocery store with which
can help them keep busy and focused.
I put out some blocks and encouraged them to build towers together.
The families were terrific at following their child's lead in building.
They encouraged them to count and match their towers.
Playing games is a great way to learn social skills as well as
increasing their vocabulary.
I set up a simple memory game.
They took turns flipping two cards to find their match.
Finally there was a place to play with loose parts.
Messages for parents were left among all the centres.

Happy Halloween

Here are a few highlights from our morning.
Shaving cream and little pumpkins.
Soft, smooth, slippery.
A old favourite, hammering golf tees into a pumpkin.
This year's favourite was this memory game.

Under each half cup was a little finger puppet.
They kept looking till they found the matching pair.
Lots of noises were made for each of the characters.
Count the pumpkin seeds.
Lentils, black beans and tiny insects to scoop.

At the end of our morning we joined the school for a Pumpkin Run.
We teamed up with our big buddies.
Centres were set up around the school yard and the groups had to run
one to another once they finished.
This centre they had to recite the poem
Five Little Pumpkins.
They played Over and Under by passing a pumpkin from person to person.
The first person passing it over their head then the next person
passing it under their legs.
We had to transfer all the 'pumpkins' (basketballs) from one bin
down the line to the other bin.
Like a fire brigade.
And the last one we did was to toss rings around the witches' hats.

Ready, Set, Learn 2015

Ready, Set, Learn is for families with three year old children to connect with their neighbour school and learn ways to support their child's literacy and numeracy development. It occurs once a year.

Our Ready, Set, Learn event was based around the book Bark, George by Jules Feiffer.  We started by reading the book together then the children with their grown ups played at a variety of centres. We ended the session with retelling the story with our dog puppet.

                             talking
The first activity was based on the topic of talking.  The parent picked a sound word, made the sound and the child picked the animal that makes that sound.

                             books
We coloured books that I found on Making Learning Fun.  They took the book home for practicing retelling a story.

Another activity from Making Learning Fun was a shadow matching game.

                             play
A fun activity that the children really enjoyed was playing with the animals and deciding where they might live; forest, water, jungle or farm.

                                numbers
For an activity about numbers we created a tub of animals in rice.  The children sifted through the rice to find the animals.  They sorted and counted each animal.

                                     getting along with others
A matching game to encourage taking turns and getting along was found on Making Learning Fun site.

                      physical activity
We had fun singing “Knife, Fork, Spoon, Spatula” for an active game.
