Cooking with Cauliflower

This week we made Cauliflower Bread for our snack.
Costco sells cauliflower already chopped which made it easier to work with the children.
I found the recipe at ifoodreal.
First you bake the cauliflower at 375 for 20 minutes.
When you take it out turn your oven up to 450 for the next step of baking to come.
Place a tea towel over a bowl and scoop all the baked cauliflower into it.
It is still hot so let it cool a bit.
I did this part myself while the children watched me magically
make water come out.
Once you have most of the liquid squeezed out place it in a bowl.
I had saved some of the original cauliflower and we did a comparison.
Next add 1/4 cup of egg whites,
and a half cup of cheese.
Sprinkle in a teaspoon of italian herbs and some pepper.
Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and
flatten it out.
Put it in the oven (at 450F) for 18 minutes.
Remove and sprinkle on another 1/2 cup of cheese.
Finish baking another 5 minutes.
Put it under the broiler till golden brown.
All that is left is to cut and eat.
Most of the children tried it and liked it.
I think because of the cheesy flavour.

Mashing Chickpeas

This week's snack recipe is Child Friendly Hummus from My Fussy Eater.
It's easy to use the food processor to make it but
today we started mashing the chick peas by hand so the children could
see them transform.
We used two different shaped mashers and learned that the one
with pointy ends worked better.
We eventually used a food processor to mix the rest of the ingredients
and make it smooth.
We ate the hummus with tomatoes, celery, carrots and crackers.
Yum!

Painting Cookies

There's a great recipe for painting sugar cookies before you bake them
at forkly.
I pre-cut the sugar cookies into egg shapes
and mixed food colouring into egg yolks.
The children painted them as they wished.
Into the oven for about 8 minutes
then you can eat your art.

Easy Fortune Cookies

I found an easy recipe for fortune cookies to make with children
from here.
I made a photo recipe page for the families to follow.
The parents were asked to write a fortune for their child's cookie.
The children followed the photos and made their own cookie.
Pie dough makes this so easy and inexpensive.
With one crust we made 20 cookies.

Pat-a-Cake

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man
Bake me a pancake as fast as you can.
Roll it and pat it and mark it with a 'B'
And put it in a pan for baby and me.
The children made their own little pancakes this week.
Following the recipe,
measuring,
adding,
stirring.
While they were cooking they said the nursery rhyme to help past the time.
