Spin a Turkey Tail

             IMG_8921
I pulled out the lazy susan turntables this morning with the thought of squeezing paint onto paper circles to make turkey tail feathers.  But I got busy with other things and just put out markers, pencils and crayons.  They worked better than I thought.

In the past we have done this activity using paint and the children had difficulty adding the paint and spinning the turntables by themselves.

With the markers, pencils and crayons they could manage it.

Occasionally parents did help or worked together to create their art.

Here are a few of our turkeys.

I Am Thankful Tree

IMG_8730IMG_8731
Thanksgiving is this weekend and our school has been talking about gratitude.  I chose the book “Thanks for Thanksgiving” to start the children thinking about many things that people are thankful for.  The text is simple and to the point.

After reading the book the children picked a leaf shaped paper to print what they are thankful for.

We then added their leaves to this bulletin board.

Today we shared the book and activity with our big buddies.

I am thankful for you following along as I grow and learn with the children.

Story - Turkey Lake

A chalk talk.
Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.
I think if I had added "And it makes this sound, Gobble, Gobble" they would have guessed it.

Turkey Time for Snack

               oct 3 006
We made turkeys at the snack table this morning.
       oct 3 007
The materials were arranged in a sectional tray.
     oct 3 009
And a ‘recipe’ was created for them to follow.

The most interesting thing that happened with this snack this morning was that the children thought the bread was chocolate or cake or brownies.  I heard it several times.

They were very eager to give it a try.
Some changed their minds when their parents told them it wasn’t something sweet.

But by the end of the morning most had given the pumpernickel bread a try.

                               And gobbled it up!

Clothespin Turkeys

A simple craft for Thanksgiving.
Made with paper plates, clothespins, paint and of course googly eyes.

I love when a child does their own thing at the art table.
The next picture shows a child cutting the paper plate to make his feathers.
Even after his mom put clothespins on the plate, he took them off and continued cutting all the way around.
The next picture shows a little girl so involved with her painting that it didn't matter what she painted on - the plate, the paper or her hand.

Sign of the week - thanks, turkey

This week we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving so with that we will be learning the sign for thank you plus the sign for turkey.
The verse that we will sing and sign is Mr. Turkey.

Mr Turkey's tail is big and wide
He swings it when he walks
His neck is long, his chin is red.
And he gobbles when he talks.
Gobble! Gobble! Gobble!
