What's in the Tub Tuesday?

Well it wasn't in a tub but our sensory activity this week was making our own cheese buns.
One of our daily routines is to stop at a local bakery and buy cheese buns for a snack.
It's a rainy day so we didn't go out for a walk and therefore missing our cheese buns.
I had some pretzel dough in the freezer which made it a quick activity to get going.
The girls loved poking and patting and the oldest little One enjoyed singing Pat-a-cake while they played.
A short time in the oven,
a little time to cool off
and we were ready to eat.

Jelly Bean Stew

Jelly beans, one of my favourite candies, was a focus this past week.
I brought a pot full of plastic shaped jelly beans for the little one to play with.
Mmmm making stew for two.
Practicing our colours as we sing.
At the end of the week we tasted real jelly beans.

Scrambling Eggs

I started making scrambled eggs with the little one several weeks ago.
She loves sitting on my lap and doing it together.
This is a wonderful way to teach her how to cook.
As I said we have been making scrambled eggs for a few weeks and pulling the shell apart has been the hardest thing for her.
So one time when we were playing with play dough I shaped some dough like eggs and gave them to her to crack.  We went through a lot of 'eggs' that day.
This morning, after two eggs I moved her over to her chair and started on a fresh bowl, in case there were any shells in that first batch.
We were making extra eggs this morning for her Opa.  Here she is signing for Opa to come and watch.
After the first video I showed her how to hold the fork a bit differently to make it easier to 'whisk'.  Next time we make these I'll have to remember to bring her small whisk, from her play kitchen, to use.
In this video she is signing egg (she signs it with one finger on each hand, instead of two. Remember she is a baby and still developing that fine motor) and cook.
Yum!
A great, quick meal and maybe the beginning of loving to cook.

Snack - Tortilla Chips and Dip

We made a very simple snack today.
We started by cutting soft tortillas.
We tried to use cookie cutters but it was really difficult
so we switched to knives to cut
and our hands to rip.
Then I lightly covered the tortillas with cooking spray
and a gentle sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.
They baked at 350 for about 15 minutes.
While the tortillas baked we made a dip using cool whip
and raspberry jam.
Simple and delicious.
The tortillas were crisp and easy to dip.
A package of tortillas make a lot of chips
so we will be making more tomorrow.

Cooking with Cauliflower

This week we made Cauliflower Bread for our snack.
Costco sells cauliflower already chopped which made it easier to work with the children.
I found the recipe at ifoodreal.
First you bake the cauliflower at 375 for 20 minutes.
When you take it out turn your oven up to 450 for the next step of baking to come.
Place a tea towel over a bowl and scoop all the baked cauliflower into it.
It is still hot so let it cool a bit.
I did this part myself while the children watched me magically
make water come out.
Once you have most of the liquid squeezed out place it in a bowl.
I had saved some of the original cauliflower and we did a comparison.
Next add 1/4 cup of egg whites,
and a half cup of cheese.
Sprinkle in a teaspoon of italian herbs and some pepper.
Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and
flatten it out.
Put it in the oven (at 450F) for 18 minutes.
Remove and sprinkle on another 1/2 cup of cheese.
Finish baking another 5 minutes.
Put it under the broiler till golden brown.
All that is left is to cut and eat.
Most of the children tried it and liked it.
I think because of the cheesy flavour.

Mashing Chickpeas

This week's snack recipe is Child Friendly Hummus from My Fussy Eater.
It's easy to use the food processor to make it but
today we started mashing the chick peas by hand so the children could
see them transform.
We used two different shaped mashers and learned that the one
with pointy ends worked better.
We eventually used a food processor to mix the rest of the ingredients
and make it smooth.
We ate the hummus with tomatoes, celery, carrots and crackers.
Yum!
