Good-night, Owl

                 IMG_1613
Good-night, Owl! by Pat Hutchins is a great book of animal sounds.

I turned it into an oral story by finding pictures of each of the birds, insect and animal that was in the story.
Hope you enjoyed it.

Our craft today was to make snowy animals using pinecones and cottonballs.

After stuffing the pinecone full of cotton they then glued pom poms on and
                                  added googly eyes.

Some children used wool and looped it to make wings.

Owl Buddies

Our big buddies created some beautiful art work about owls.

Here are a few pieces.

That inspired a joint project with us, their little buddies.
Ms. Smith their teacher found a handprint owl idea on Pinterest and
we planned our time together around it.

We started with watching a few of our big buddies act out the story Owl Babies by Martin Waddell.

Then we painted each others hand to create our art.

The children, both young and old, practiced taking turns,
oct 24 018 being gentle,
oct 24 019 oct 24 034
leading and following each other,
oct 24 025 supporting through actions
oct 24 027 and words.

Even though we have a brief 20 – 25 minutes together, it is full of conversation,
laughter and getting to know each other better.

Now we have a beautiful owl art gallery in the school hallway.

Owl Pellet Dissecting

Last week while we were studying owls I brought in a owl pellet.
We talked about different animals that owls may eat.
Then we pulled the pellet apart.

We tried to guess what the animal was. We did a survey and the majority thought it might be a mouse, although there were some feathers in the pellet.
It was a mole.

Owl Babies Reenactment

Almost everyday this week we've read the story Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. It's a fun repetitive story about 3 owl babies who wonder where there Mother has gone.

Today I made 3 owl hats using baseball caps, feathers and cupcake liners. Set them up in the reading corner on 3 seats (representing the branches in the tree).

At story I asked for volunteers to play the roles of the babies and then we told the story.

Our little owls did a great job repeating their lines and at the end when Mother Owl returned they flapped their wings and danced.

Feather Painting

Today at the craft table we used feathers instead of paint brushes.
We used feathers, different size tubes taped together and tubes cut in half to make different marks on owl shaped paper.
The children strokes were very light on the paper.
The parents were able to make marks that looked like feathers.

We wondered what you call a group owls? A flock?
We decided on a family.
