Fun with Our Grandfriends

During our visit with grandfriends this morning I heard these comments from the seniors. “This has been the most fun morning I’ve had.”  “I haven’t giggled this much in years.”

This morning we tried finger painting with our grand friends but we didn’t use paint.  We mixed up a box of caramel pudding and gave each person a big spoonful.  The grandfriends looked at it and said “what do we do with it?”

It took a few minutes for them to touch it.  One little girl was enthusiastic and inspired the grandfriend beside her to try it.  That’s when the laughing started.

The gentleman at the table, when asked if he wanted to finger paint, said he doesn’t like his hands being sticky.  When we checked back with him he had cleverly put a second piece of paper on top of his and was squishing it together.

I brought some tools to the table to use instead of their hands.  I encouraged them to talk about what their painting looked like.  His looked like the sun or when I said it looked like a lion he was quite impressed and laughed.

From there the fun continued.

We brought over some play trays.  The seniors are very expressive with the children telling them what they see happening.  That motivates the children to show their grandfriend more.

This week we visited the extended care wing and met new grandfriends.  We sang songs and moved our bodies and we played with the parachute meant more laughter.

We showed them our song “Knife, Fork, Spoon, Spatula – Cha Cha Cha”  and some of the grandfriends really enjoyed to cha cha.

It surprised all of us when this grandfriend sat down on the floor for story time but she was just that involved with the children that she followed what they were doing.

Normally after songs and story we say bye and head back to the activity room for our snack but today these two grand friends didn’t want their time together to end and joined us.  As they sat and shared cookies and juice I heard one of them say “I’ve never had a friend this young.  It’s quite lovely.”

A fabulous morning sharing simple activities but bringing much joy and laughter
among the generations.  We are so lucky to have special friends.

Drum Play

Parents have been saving coffee cans, infant formula cans and any other big can with a lid and bringing them in to StrongStart.  We finally had enough for a larger group, approximately 30, to use.  Here are a few songs that we sang using our DIY drums.

Boom Ditty Boom
Boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom
Down in the jungle where nobody goes
Lives a great big gorilla washing his clothes.
Playing boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom
Boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom

Down in the jungle where nobody goes
Was a very tall giraffe walking on his toes
Playing boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom
Boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom

Down in the jungle where nobody goes
Was a great big elephant blowing his nose.
Playing boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom
Boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom

Down in the jungle where nobody goes
Was a pack of lemurs walking in a row
Playing boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom
Boom ditty boom ditty boom boom boom

 Row, Row, Row Your Boat
Jingle Bells
And lastly Twinkle Little Star.

Ring the Bells

dec 17 001
To me Christmas and bells go hand in hand.
We hear them at this time of year in songs, stories, churches, school
and around town.
  dec 18 027
I thought of buying the set of bells you can get from teacher supply stores
but, one, I didn’t have the extra money and two, I know they can be very noisy.

So off to the thrift stores and it didn’t take me long to find this collection
right here in town.

Each little bell makes a slightly different tone from the other.
  dec 19 009 dec 19 010
Then there are different jingle bells, single, clusters, some with fabric
to change the tone.

I posted a few songs on the wall to encourage singing
but the interest lays in experimenting with each bell.

Musical Instrument Exploration

nov 23 060
Our collection of musical instruments have been out for a week or two
for the children and families to explore.
dec 5 037 There’s a rain stick.
dec 5 038 Bongos and maracas.
dec 5 036 Castanet.
nov 27 012 Hand drum and tambourine.
dec 5 009 A Chinese Bolang Gu.
IMG_1685 A thumb guitar.
dec 5 006 A thunder drum.
nov 23 060 And a croaking frog.
 dec 5 033
Everyday the children venture to the table to make music.
Trying the instruments in different ways.
Or together.
Playing with the musical instruments challenges us physically,
how to handle the instrument to make it sound good.
Discovering a variety ways to use each instrument lets us hear them in different ways.
Like the thunder drum, shaking it slowly makes a quiet sound,
shaking it hard makes the sound much louder.

Sorry the sound doesn't come through that well in the video but you see
how the child explore and experiment with each piece.

Music Time

Once a month Jill, a preschool music teacher, visits StrongStart to lead us through a music time.
She runs a program called Music for Young Children.
Today we sang Christmas songs and because it wasn`t a large group she was able to use her `co-op` band.
She made it from a super long bungee cord and made a fabric cover for it.
Each person found a spot to hold on as they sang a song about trotting on a horse.
At the end of the song they fall backwards.
As they fall back the bungee cord pulls them back up.

Everyone got in on the fun.
A big thanks to Jill for volunteering her time and knowledge with us.
