Creating New Snowflakes from Old

        jan 9 012
Using paint rollers is a favourite at the art table
(you may of heard me say that before).
It doesn’t matter what we are doing, it draws the children to the table.
This morning we re-purposed items that looked like snowflakes to make snowflake prints.

jan 9 029  jan 9 030
We used non slip bath tub shapes that looked like a flower.
We painted it two ways, with the suction cups facing up,

                                                      and down.

We used plastic snowflakes that worked beautifully
      jan 9 013
and left an impression in the paint on the tray.
We tried pressing paper on it to make a print but it smooshed into a blob.

jan 9 017  jan 9 021
We used cardboard snowflakes that left a great print too
and was easy to roll the paint onto.

jan 9 061 jan 9 063
We used bubble wrap and the children painted it two ways,
on top of paper leaving an outline and
then by pressing the paper on top of bubble wrap.

jan 9 019  jan 9 020
We tried making snowflakes with straws too.
Not too successful though.

    jan 9 015
This mom decided to cut out her own snowflake and paint it
~ wonderful!

jan 9 031
It was messy artwork but lots of fun.

jan 9 014 Proud to show off her art.

Tortilla Snowflakes

jan 8 013
Even though it was pouring outside today we had a bit of snow
indoors at the snack table.
We made edible snowflakes from tortillas.
jan 8 003
Start with a flour tortilla (you could try corn but I wanted it white)
and cut it.
I thought it would be easier to use a cookie cutter than scissors to create
the snowflake design but it took a lot of pressure to cut the pieces out.
Also as the tortilla sat out in the air between children cutting it, it would
dry out and became even more difficult to cut.
jan 8 009
Next place on baking sheet and spray with a cooking spray.
jan 8 010
Put in the oven for about 10 minutes till crunchy and slightly brown.
jan 8 004
While it’s still warm sprinkle on snow (icing sugar).
jan 8 011
We broke them into smaller pieces because we used 10 inch tortillas.

Very easy, very inexpensive, very yummy!

Stick Snowflakes

jan 7 043
It was wonderful to see so many families back for the first day of
StrongStart.
Two weeks is a long time of no programs to attend.

jan 7 036
The art table was busy with children and grown ups designing
snowflakes
using popsicle sticks.
jan 7 035
First step was to decide what shape your snowflake would be.
Most went with a simple laying the sticks across each other in
an 'X' style.
jan 7 022
But as the morning progressed I started to see other designs come to life
as the families noticed that there were little popsicle sticks too.

Second step was to decorate the snowflake.

Adding buttons was a last minute decision on my part.
Watching the children search through them reminded me how much the simple
things that you find around the house are just as attractive as glittery
purchased items.

A Message from the Fairies

      IMG_0999 (2)
This morning as I was entering Fairy Lane I was surprised and thrilled to see
this sign. “Love” made with paint and glitter.
It must be the fairies way of saying thank you.

Over the past two weeks I’ve been able to walk through Fairy Lane
almost everyday and I’ve been tickled each time to find a new little treasure
left by the doors.

Ornaments hanging above the doors.

Precious toys placed in front of the doors too.

And there’s been visitors calling.

Frogs, ducks, nut crackers and robots.

I've seen coins, real and not left as gifts.

shows that they are settling in for good.

Time to consider creating a different trail for other creatures of the woods, like gnomes, trolls, nymphs and more.  But should it be in the forest or a different one?
