Bread Pudding Recipe

We had left over bread from our Rolled Up French Toast snack last week.
So I bought a few more eggs and milk and we made bread pudding.
                  IMG_2812
The recipe calls for 3 eggs, which we love to crack open.

And also spend a few seconds picking stray shells out of the bowl.

                  We whisked the eggs together.
Helping each other hold the bowl in one place.

We practiced our pouring skills when we added two cups of milk.
                IMG_2823
Then whisked the eggs and milk together.  We sprinkled in some cinnamon too.

Next we ripped up bread into little pieces, even crumbs.
We added 9 slices in total.

Each of the children added their bread to the egg mixture then stirred it in.
We watched how the bread changed and became soggy.

I totally forgot to bring sugar for our cooking so instead we added raisins.
              IMG_2839
We spread it in the pan then baked it for 45 minutes at 350.

All baked and ready to eat.

Big Buddy Actors

Last week when we got together with our grade 6/7 big buddies we enjoyed a special treat.  A few of the big buddies performed a play for us.

The Three Little Pigs performed by The Big Bad Wolf and the Three Pigs.

They did an awesome job, well spoken and clear so everyone could hear
                              and follow along.

The little buddies were so attentive that the room was quiet during the whole performance.  The big buddies received a huge applause at the end.

Here is the story.

Small Pond World Play

Back at school, the day after visiting the pond, a beaver lodge was
added to our small pond world.

We could see the beavers busy collecting trees to add to their den.

They got a bit of help adding ‘boy-size’ logs.

Other animals that visit the pond were added to our play world;
eagles, deer, raccoon, squirrels and rabbits.

Pond Water and Patience

This week at the pond we were still hopeful of finding frog eggs or tadpoles.

We spent time walking along the shore line checking in the grasses for frog spawn but no luck.  This is our fourth week visiting the pond and it's exciting to see the children race to the water ready to explore.

We didn't find any frog eggs but we did scoop water into two containers and
spent a bit of time looking at it.

We used our loupes to get a closer look.  This is what we saw.
                       IMGP2933
At first we thought it was a stick stuck to the bug so I picked it up to have a look.  Using the loupes I saw that it was a white stripe down it’s back.  Then surprising all of us, the bug jumped high into the air and was gone.

The children were losing interest in looking at the water but the grown ups had patience and as I was thinking about dumping it back into the pond they noticed…

Using our Bugs of British Columbia guide we learned that the bug is a Damselfly Larva.  I decided to bring them back to school to observe for awhile.

This week I also wanted to start talking more about the beaver lodge.  You
can see it behind us in the picture below.

We sat for a snack and I read the story “Little Beaver and the Echo”.

Then we brought out books about beavers for the children to read together,
researching about how the beaver makes the lodge.

We learned that the lodge is made with sticks and mud.

We drew a quick picture as a reference for next week.

We finished the visit using binoculars to get a better look at the
                          lodge across the pond.

All packed and ready to head back to school.

Measuring Worms

           IMG_2095
At a table beside our worm composter we used fake worms to learn about
                                    measuring.
          IMG_2099
I used an old Scrabble tile holder as the measuring stick.  Marks were drawn
on the stick counting in centimeters.
     IMG_2102
The children placed a worm on the measuring stick then started at one end
counting how many marks till they got to the end of the stick.
     IMG_2101
After measuring I noticed that this child sorted them by size.
