Sticky Autumn Tree
I cut a leafless tree from tissue paper and taped it to a white board,
hanging on the back of a shelf that faces the entrance of our room.
Then I attached a large sheet of sticky paper (contact paper), with the
sticky side facing out, over top of it. Placed a basket of silk leaves
in front.
It wasn’t as attractive to the children as I hoped it would be. A few
played with it, placing the leaves here and there. But generally it
was left alone.
On the positive side it did make a pretty autumn picture for our room.

What if you put a fun/bold border around the edges or made felt "baskets" to "collect" the leaves? The kids could sort by color or by number all on the sticky board. They could make a border themselves around the tree by using the leaves in a pattern. So disappointing when we get excited about an activity and it doesn't go as we hoped. Sorry....it does look so inviting, too : (
ReplyDeleteI think you have a great idea to make it more attractive and inviting with a boarder. I had thought of trying to hang containers so it would be more accessible but couldn't figure out how to do it to keep it safe. Your idea of using felt baskets would have worked. They would have been light enough to attach or hang. I'll remember these for next time.
DeleteEven though it didn't turn out like I had hoped I have learned different ideas from comments to this post. Thanks so much.
Hi Mrs.Wagner,
ReplyDeleteI am a fellow student from Mrs. Smiths class. I found this piece of art, a idea for fall. With the warm colored leaves on and off the branches, it gave it a really nice feel to the art piece. Including the little nice phrase in the top left corner. Really cute piece!
~Mia
HI Mia. Thanks for your comments. The phrase is part of a rhyme that we have been singing. Do you remember any autumn songs that you learned as a preschooler?
DeleteHi StrongStart,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your art about Autumn. In fact Autumn is one of my favourite seasons! I also really, really absolutely adored the leaves and how you made them and how you made it possible to really pop them out. Also I loved the colours in the leaves and how you made them bright colours like real leaves on a real tree. It was also very cool that you made the art like a tree in real life and how you only put some leaves on it and not completely covered with leaves. But I have a question, how did you make the Autumn trees?
Keep it up!
~ Shayne
Hi Shayne, The colours really pop when we use black paper as the background. The autumn trees were made from ripped brown construction paper and then the leaves were made using cookie cutters.
DeleteThat's cool I loved preschool all the the way up to grade 6 now. Also cool way to make Autumn trees by construction paper, black paper ( used as back round ), and you used cookie cutters now your just making me hungry for a cookie.
DeleteCOOKIES!!!! :-)
~ Shayne
Shayne, did you see an earlier post (from last year) about the leaf cookies we made to eat? You could try those at home.
DeleteHi Mrs.Wagner,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I'm a grade seven in Mrs.Smiths class. I always love seeing your guy's art work in the hall, It lights up the school. Personally, I think autumn it one of the best seasons. I look forward in seeing some Halloween art pretty soon. Awesome job.
~Kaiya
Hi Kaiya thank you for your comments. I love autumn too especially the colours orange and brown. What do you think would be a good Halloween art project for the StrongStart families?
DeleteMrs. Wagner,
DeleteThere's so many good crafts that you could do, it's hard to choose! One of my favorites for Halloween is a spider. A really fun way to make it is to use the kid's hands, paint them black, and use them as stamps. The palm of the hand is the body, and you can stamp the fingers twice to make legs. Have fun making more crafts!

Thanks for the idea Kaiya. I think we are going to paint our hands to make owl prints this week.
DeleteMrs. Wagner,
ReplyDeleteSounds great! This week in my class were drawing, and then painting owls. I guess you and Ms. Smith think similarly.
Kaiya W.
Ms. Smith and I share many ideas. Hopefully we will display our owl art together.
